Ray Maynard, Skydive Long Island
Business, Other, Ten Years experience
Riverhead, New York
We are located in CALVERTON, NY and own a 23,000 sf hangar on 16.3 acres of land. Once home to Grumman, builders of the F-14 and Lunar Modules, it is now home to skydivers. The airport is HUGE (about 2,900 acres to be exact) and has the largest landing area in the US! We use a 10,000-foot-long runway, and are the only aviation use on the runway, virtually giving us our own private airstrip.
In 1986, Ray Maynard founded Skydive Long Island and for many years operated out of a very small airstrip in East Moriches called Spadaro Airport. Ray was increasingly more concerned about safety at that airport and considered closing the business rather than continue to operate out of it. Fortunately, Ray heard there may be a chance to open in Calverton and went to the town board to petition for a skydiving facility at the Calverton Enterprise Airpark.
Ray's dream came true! On September 20th, 2000, we received approval to move in to Calverton Enterprise Airpark! Since then we have grown into the premiere skydiving facility in the tri-state area offering the highest jumps and largest skydiving aircraft on Long Island.
